Julian Lawrence Gargiulo: BORN TO PLAY CHOPIN
OGGI 7, (New York metropolitan area weekly)
Translated by Norma Dawn

To play like this, one must be born to it. Once again Julian Lawrence Gargiulo amazed with his Chopin, to whom he dedicated the entire first have of his concert Thursday, September 21 at Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall in New York.

After his poetic phrasings in the 'Nocturne Opus Post' his performance of the famous 'Minute' Waltz generated a spontaneous ovation from a sophisticated and satisfied audience. Among the highlights of the concert, the Scherzo No. 2, which Gargiulo played with energy and verve.

As usual, Gargiulo talked, joked and laughed with his audience, combining classical piano with his unique style of "stand-up comedy" to create an original and fresh performance.

In the second half of the concert he gave an astounding rendition of Beethoven's "Tempest" and closed by engaging the enthralled audience in games and questions, that ended up involving even the personal life of the young artist.

Julian is a pianist that combines natural talent with an effortless charm and the irony of the Neapolitan theater. His education spans three continents - he studied at the Verona Conservatory, the Moscow Conservatory and the Peabody Institute in Baltimore. And maybe that is exactly his advantage: a wide frame of reference, from the most refined lyricism to a powerful sonority, combined with an incredible resistance, which he takes full advantage of. Especially in Chopin, in which Julian's true nature comes out.
